Blue Parrot Beach House: Travel with a Purpose
For the Bekkers , travel has always meant more than discovering beautiful destinations. Having lived across Africa, Europe and the Americas, They developed a passion for exploring and experiencing the world, but also a heart for helping the people they met along the way.
Belize had been on our travel list since 1998, but the arrival of our sons delayed those plans for a little while. As a family, we also wanted to spend a Thanksgiving holiday volunteering, both as a way of giving back to our community and of teaching our children compassion through action.
In 2013, those two dreams came together when our family traveled to Belize to participate in a volunteer event. It was love at first sight. The small town with friendly faces and dirt roads, reminded us of our childhood. That experience created a lasting connection with the country and its people, eventually inspiring our investment in Blue Parrot Beach House.
Today, that spirit of service remains at the heart of everything we do.

Our guiding principle at Blue Parrot Beach House is “Unreasonable Hospitality.” To us, this means going beyond what is expected to create thoughtful, personal moments that guests will remember long after they return home.
We take time to learn why our guests are traveling and what would make their stay truly meaningful. Sometimes, it is not the grandest gesture that leaves the strongest impression, it is the most personal one
This is what Unreasonable Hospitality means to us: noticing what matters, caring about the details and looking for opportunities to make people feel genuinely known and celebrated.
This level of care extends throughout the guest experience. From personalized concierge assistance and thoughtfully planned tours to private chef dinners, Beach front massages, special celebrations and experiences we strive to make every stay feel effortless, meaningful and uniquely personal.
Hospitality That Strengthens a community
Our commitment to service reaches far beyond providing memorable beachfront vacations. We believe hospitality should also create opportunities for the community that makes those vacations possible.
Children are the future, and we help equip local students with essential learning materials. We encourage our guests to become part of this effort by donating school supplies, contributing books to Miss Bertie’s library or bringing fabric for local sewing program.
We support sewing classes that teach women to create items for the tourism market. This program provides practical skills and opportunities to earn an income, support their families and build greater independence.
The citrus industry in Belize suffered tremendous losses with the discovery of “Citrus Greening” in the Hopkins are. Roughly 70% of trees needed to be destroyed and new trees needed to be planted. Then hurricane Earl devastated the area. Many families lost the only income they had for years. A4JB - a charity we support, donated staples like rice and beans to affected families.
In 2016, we brought aquaponics systems to several affected remote villages in southern Belize. These sustainable systems enabled communities to grow fresh food while promoting food security, self-sufficiency and long-term opportunity.
The same philosophy is visible throughout Blue Parrot Beach House. We support Belizean artists and artisans by purchasing locally created artwork, handcrafted furniture and decorative pieces. Guests do not simply stay at a property in Belize—they experience a home shaped by the country’s creativity, culture and craftsmanship.
We partner with local charities and entrepreneurs whenever possible. Guests can explore Belize with businesses such as Get To Know Belize Adventures, while our in-house chef shares the country’s flavors through elevated interpretations of traditional Garifuna cuisine.
Local guides, fishermen, artists, craftspeople and service providers all become part of the Blue Parrot experience. Supporting one entrepreneur rarely benefits only one person. It creates a ripple effect - generating opportunities for other suppliers, strengthening families and keeping tourism revenue circulating within the local community.
More Than a Place to Stay
Set along the Caribbean Sea in Hopkins, Blue Parrot Beach House combines the privacy of a beachfront villa with the thoughtful services and amenities of a boutique resort. Yet the property’s true character is found in the purpose behind it: using hospitality and tourism as forces for connection, empowerment and sustainable community growth.
What began in 2013 as a family Thanksgiving volunteer trip has grown into an enduring relationship with Belize. Blue Parrot Beach House is more than a beautiful place to stay. It is a story of purposeful travel, responsible tourism and Unreasonable Hospitality - going above and beyond for our guests while helping the community around us thrive.
