Belize offers both veteran or novice travelers an amazing array of tours and experiences. Most tours are year round but three of the most amazing tours, are also the most limited.
The scarlet macaw migration at Red Bank and the bioluminescent tour on Anderson Lagoon and the whale shark migration, are three of the most popular tourist attractions in Belize. If you visit between November and May, dont miss these exquisite experiences. Here's some information about each:
Scarlet Macaw Migration at Red Bank
When: The scarlet macaw migration typically occurs from January to April, with the peak season in February.
What to Expect: Thousands of scarlet macaws gather at Red Bank to roost overnight. In the morning, they fly out in a spectacular display, creating a breathtaking sight. Don’t forget your bug spray and sun block!
How to Get There: Red Bank is located about 25 miles south of Hopkins.
Bioluminescent Night Tour on Anderson Lagoon
When: Bioluminescent tours are available in the dry season - December - April, but they are best in the dark of the moon.
What to Expect: On a bioluminescent tour, you'll take a boat ride on Anderson Lagoon. As you sail through the water, the plankton will glow, creating a magical and otherworldly experience.
How to Get There: Anderson Lagoon is a short boat ride from Hopkins. You can meet the boat captain at the Sittee River Marina, just at sundown.
The Whale Shark Migration
When: two days before the full moon to ten days after, during the months of March, April, May, and June.
What to Expect: Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea. These docile gentle giants is not threat to humans and when in a good mood, they will hang around divers for hours. Due to the Whale Sharks brief visit to Placencia and local conservation efforts, Whale Shark diving is extremely limited, Definately reserve in advance!
Tips for Visiting Both Attractions:
Book in Advance: Both attractions can be popular, so it's a good idea to book your tour in advance.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: If you're going to Red Bank, be prepared to do some walking, bring sunblock and bug spray as well.
Bring a Camera: You'll want to take plenty of photos of the scarlet macaws and the bioluminescent plankton.
