Frequently Asked Questions About Vacationing in Belize

Plan Your Perfect Belize Vacation with Confidence

Welcome to the Blue Parrot Beach House FAQ! Whether you're dreaming of turquoise waters, jungle adventures, or cultural immersion, Belize offers something for every traveler. To help you prepare, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions our guests ask when planning their stay in Hopkins, Belize.

Getting to Hopkins, Belize

How do I get to Hopkins from Belize International Airport (BZE)?

The fastest and most comfortable way is a private ground transfer—a scenic 1.5-hour drive via the newly paved Coastal Highway. You can also rent a car, or take a domestic flight to Dangriga, followed by a 40-minute drive. At Blue Parrot, we help guests arrange reliable, door-to-door transfers with our partners at Get To Know Belize Adventures.

Do I need a car in Hopkins?

No, but having a car gives you flexibility. Hopkins is walkable, and Blue Parrot offers complimentary golf cart* when renting for 7 days. For inland excursions or longer drives, we recommend renting a vehicle or booking guided tours. There is a car rental in Hopkins - Hopkins Auto Rental. They have a limited amount of wenches available.

Safety in Belize

Is Belize safe for tourists?

Yes—especially in tourist-friendly towns like Hopkins, Placencia, and San Pedro. Most crime is localized to Belize City’s south side. Stick to well-known areas, lock up valuables, avoid walking alone at night, and use licensed guides. Compared to cities with similar residency, like Atlanta, Belize is much safer.

Is Hopkins safe for families and solo travelers?

Absolutely. Hopkins is a friendly, laid-back Garifuna village known for its hospitality. Our beach house is located in the quiet resort zone.

Entry Requirements & Health

Do I need a visa to visit Belize?

If you’re from the U.S., Canada, UK, or most of Europe, you do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days. Just bring a valid passport. If you intend to stay longer than 30 days, it is crucial you renew your visa stamp before expiration - immigration is very serious about this renewal - even a day late will land you in hot water!

Are vaccines or COVID tests required?

As of now, no COVID test or special vaccine is required.

Money and Currency

What currency is used in Belize?

The Belize Dollar (BZD) is the official currency. The fixed exchange rate is 2 BZD = 1 USD. U.S. dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas.

Are credit cards accepted?

Yes—at most hotels, restaurants, and tour companies. However, we recommend carrying some cash for small shops and local vendors.

Language and Culture

What language is spoken in Belize?

English is the official language, making travel easy for North American visitors. You’ll also hear Spanish, Creole, and Garifuna in Hopkins.

What is the culture like in Hopkins?

Hopkins is the cultural heart of the Garifuna people, known for drumming, dancing, and rich traditions. Visitors can enjoy local cuisine, music, and genuine community hospitality.
